Community Spots for the Elderly to Socialize

Aadya G.

As people get older, they tend to face many different issues. One of these major issues is loneliness. Loneliness can have many drastic effects depending on the person but it tends to be something that many people want to avoid. The loneliness that the elderly face is an ongoing issue that many people want to resolve. There are many ways to resolve this issue, and one of them is finding places in a town that is local to you where the elderly can socialize and hopefully have some fun. Here are some places in Naperville where the elderly can socialize.

DoYogaWithMe

Yoga is one thing that can help many people young and old . DoYogaWithMe is an online instructed  class that is completely free.  This yoga program is specifically for the elderly as the yoga  that they teach is  specialized for seniors and their needs. Yoga is known to help with anxiety, depression, loneliness and many other physical and mental health issues. This can be very beneficial for many seniors who are wanting to get active and find themselves again. They offer a variety of different types of yoga such as chair yoga which is a gentle form of yoga that can be done while sitting in a chair.  Seniors can choose which classes they want to take based on their needs and what is most comfortable for them.

Singing for Seniors at the Compass Church

Singing For Seniors is a program that can help many seniors start to socialize with others and start to do new things and activities. Singing For Seniors, held at The Compass Church, offers practice sessions as well as transportation options for concerts. They will have a volunteer member pick and drop the senior home if transportation is an issue. According to their website, “No senior wishing to attend has ever been turned away.”  Singing is known to help seniors lift their spirits and exercise their brain and lungs. Being with new people  and a new environment can help many of the elderly interact with new people and eventually  make new friends.

Joseph and Sarah Levy Senior Center (Bolingbrook)

This senior center has been around since 1991 and has a variety of different activities for seniors to participate in as well as opportunities for seniors to socialize. The Levy Center is free for those who live in Naperville in Will County that are located east of Washington Street. Seniors that live outside of that area are required to pay $12 a year. They offer exercise classes, art classes, ceramics, dancing, dinners, hot lunches and more! There is always something going on at the Levy Senior Center and so many options depending on what seniors prefer. They can start to exercise their mind and body as well as being able to keep their loneliness at bay by participating in a couple of these classes and events.

The constant loneliness the elderly face can be prevented by finding the right activities and resources. There are many different options that the elderly have especially in Naperville, whether it’s online or in-person.  Our community is very senior friendly, and hopefully, many seniors will be able to find events and activities that they feel comfortable participating in  and people that they feel comfortable talking to and interacting with. It is important that the  senior citizens of Naperville are able to find opportunities where they can socialize and have fun.
