Stereotypes the Elderly Face Everyday

By: Aditi Y.

The pictures above are what most people think elderly are like!

But in reality not all elderly are like that, to prove that; did you know that one out of every four elderly citizens daily work out to be in shape!

Here are some stereotypes about elderly, and how they are not true:

1. Elderly are cranky and hate younger people

The stereotypes that old people are cranky is very inaccurate ; studies actually show that once you become older you become gentler and kinder. The part where people start talking about how elderly hate young people is also wrong. Most elderly are grandparents, and it is well known that they are the ones that usually spoil their son’s or daughter’s kids. They buy them presents, and give them a whole load of candy or other things that the kids like.

2.Old citizens live a life of solitude and are lonely!

This stereotype might not be as popular as the previous one, but it is often talked about among people. It is not true, and there is real research that proves that; At least 9 out of 10 old citizens are married and live with their wife or husband according to many sites.

3.Elderly are stuck in time, and can not adapt to the modern world!

That is false. The reason is over the years they have ADAPTED, and learned lessons about the new world. They are not stuck in time because over their lifespan they have seen a lot of changes. For example if they were stuck in time they probably wouldn’t be using cellphones or other electronic devices.
