Welcome to the March edition of the NaperTimes!
As days go by, as candles fizzle out, and as new calendars stock the stores each year, we all start to face the realities of aging. While I am just beginning to let go of my stuffed animals, the elderly face these realities everyday. As years go by, their social circles shrink, and they attend funeral after funeral, mourning the loss of friends and loved ones, growing older alone.
Many of the elderly are unable to leave their homes, have limited mobility, and suffer from physical and mental health issues. Luckily, Naperville has many great organizations for seniors, but there is still more work to be done.
Personally, two weeks ago, my grandparents moved from India to Naperville, and their feelings of loneliness are only exacerbated by the fact that they are surrounded by unfamiliar faces (as well as the dreary Midwest weather).
Research has shown that loneliness has serious effects on the elderly's physical and mental health, increasing the risk of depression, heart disease, as well as dementia, weakened immune system, and decreased overall life expectancy.
In this month’s edition, we are taking a closer look at the effects of loneliness on the elderly, the care options available, and how we can promote social connection for the elderly.
We hope you enjoy this month’s edition, and let us know your feedback at napervilletimes@gmail.com.
